ABOUT  MAYU SAEKI

_Mayu Saeki is a flutist who is currently living in New York City where she performs regularly at various jazz clubs around the city.

Mayu's introduction into the world of music began at a very early age. Born in Japan, Mayu Saeki started studying the piano at age 3, follwed by the flute at age 12, and then she began her vocal training at the age of 14. In 1992 Mayu entered Elizabeth University of Music, which is where she earned her master's degree for instrumental music in 1998.

During her time at Elizabeth University, she studied flute under Sanae Nakayama, Keiji Oshiro and Naotaka Nishida.   Mayu also studied with world-class classical flutists such as James Galway, Pierre Yves Artaud, Alain Marion, Paul Meisen, William Bennet, Hideaki Sakai, and Keith Underwood. In 2000, she became a finalist of the Japan Classical Music Competition.

During her college years, Mayu heard the music of Chet Baker, which led her to her interest in jazz and contemporary music. After graduation Mayu began her career as a musician in both the classical music and the jazz and contemporary music fields. She performed at various jazz clubs in Japan and she was a member of the Hiroshima Academy Orchestra and the HIOS Opera Academy. While studying jazz music under the direciton of saxophonists Seiji Tada and Osamu Koike, She had various performances in Tokyo as both a leader and as a member of other groups.

Mayu received high praise for her jazz trio performance In October 2011 at THE KITANO (New York City) with her trio that includes pianist Aaron Goldberg and bassist Joe Sanders. Other New York City venues where she regularly performs include Garage Restaurant and Cafe, Cleopatra's Needle and Rue B. In addition to her New York City performances, Mayu travels around the states with her her band and recently performed at An Die Musik Live in Baltimore, MD.

In 2009 Mayu became a member of NEA Jazz Master Chico Hamilton's "Euphoria." They have performed in and around New York city at such venues as: Le Poisson Rough (Winter Jazz Fest 2010), the Jazz Gallery, Bay Street Theater, An Die Musik Live.

Mayu appears on Chico Hamilton's 2 CD's that were released in September of 2011 "Revelation," and "Euphoric." Two of Mayu's compositions DILEMMA and DO YOU KNOW...? are included on these CD releases. During the CD release shows at Drom in New York and she received much praise and recognition from various jazz magazines and websites.
